Things to Do in Minnesota: Travel to the North Shore

Minnesota’s North Shore

While there may be plenty of fun things to do in the Twin Cities, sometimes it’s worth it to take a trip away from your hometown to experience something a little less familiar. Thankfully, Minnesotans don’t have to pay for pricey trips that involve airfare and accommodations.

You could take a day trip to Minnesota’s north shore today if you wanted to!

Minnesota’s north shore – everything from Duluth to Grand Marais, makes up a large portion of the state’s eastern border. The shoreline runs alongside Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes. For a great trip to the North Shore, consider some of these entertaining activities.

Duluth’s Peninsula

On the other side of Duluth’s famous lift bridge is the city’s peninsula. On the peninsula you can find several beaches. On one side of the peninsula you can find a giant bay, and on the other side, you’ll see Lake Superior’s open waters. In addition to this, lovers of big ships will have the opportunity to be entertained as well. Large vessels regularly come right up under the lift bridge and into the bay.

Two Harbors’ Light House

Head up the shoreline just a little bit (taking the scenic drive, of course) and you’ll come to a small town called Two Harbors. This city’s namesake, unsurprisingly, is two actual harbors, making this another great place for ship sighting. One of the best places to look around and enjoy Lake Superior is at the Two Harbors Light House. You can walk out to this historic spot or enjoy the rocky beachside landscape – it’s up to you!

Lutsen Mountain

If you continue on up the North Shore and come to Lutsen, you’ll be reaching the very edge of what we would consider as a possible day trip. You may want to consider overnight accommodations at this point if you’re coming from the Twin Cities.

In Lutsen, you’ll find Lusten Mountain – the largest skiing and snowboarding park in the Twin Cities. Obviously, this makes the township a great destination for skiers and boarders alike. However, visit in the warmer months and you’ll come across Lutsen’s Alpine Slide – a fun experience that’s better seen than explained.

Downtown Grand Marais

Although Minnesota continues on just a little ways past Grand Marais, we’re stopping our road trip destination list here. In Grand Marais, there’s a lot more to do and see than in the average small town. Grand Marais is a lakeside community that resembles that of a beach town on the west coast. There’s plenty of great places to visit in downtown Grand Marais, and we’d encourage you to take the time to see as many as you possibly can.
